NEW DELHI: Chinese smartphone Xiaomi has issued a public apology after an advertisement to promote the Redmi Note 9 Pro smartphone did not go well in Japan. Xiaomi Japan made references to nuclear bombs along with “Fat Man” and imagery depicting nuclear clouds. To recall, “Fat Man” was the code given by the United States for the nuclear bomb attack which devastated the Japanese city of Nagasaki during World War II.

While there is little clarification as to why someone would think of making a smartphone advertisement related to a tragic disaster like a nuclear attack, going by the video footage of the advertisement it seems that Xiaomi wanted to give out the message that the Redmi Note 9 Pro is as powerful as a nuclear bomb. The ad had mentioned “Fat Man” and showcased graphics of a nuclear explosion.

今天（5/6/2020）美国西海岸时间下午 15:30 左右（最早的问题可以追溯到 14:44，因为这是一个滚动升级），所有使用了 FB SDK 的应用遭遇大面积崩溃

史诗级的崩溃数量！​真是活久见啊！​也许工程师觉得只是金融制造业的兄弟们受罪，大多数互联网公司还歌舞升平，正义感爆棚，于是挥刀自宫一下？（纯属调侃）

这次事故带来了一个大家都没有意想到的负面效果：google 的 crashlytics 竟然被拖累挂掉了。我猜大致的原因是 google firebase 团队也没见过这么海量的 crash（又是史诗级别的活久见），导致整个处理 crash report 的 pipeline 被严重阻塞（可能达到了设计上的上限），连云服务所一直称道的可伸缩性都无法解决。结果，十几个小时过去了，目前 crashlytics 还没有恢复。

A number of popular apps including Spotify,  GroupMe, Pinterest  and TikTok  were fielding user iOS crash reports Wednesday evening, the result of an apparent issues with Facebook’s SDK according to a lengthy GitHub thread on the topic.

Downdetector logged tens of thousands of user crash reports on Spotify between 3:30 and 5:30 pm PT, the time where the bulk of reports seem to have been issued across a number of popular apps. User crash reports appeared to be dying down as of publication time.

Users had reported that their apps were shutting down immediately after launch.

For plenty of users, this will likely be news to them that many of their favorite apps are immediately connecting to Facebook  servers at launch. Developers at tech companies rely on Facebook’s SDK for advertising insights in additions to the company’s login portal. Users impacted by the issue didn’t have to be utilizing Facebook login for the issue to affect them, early reports indicate.
